Pittsburgh Promise Foundation

The Pittsburgh Promise is an economic development effort designed to encourage families to move into the city of Pittsburgh (or stay in the city) by offering scholarships to graduates of Pittsburgh Public Schools for post-secondary education at Pennsylvania colleges and trade schools. Currently at $5,000 per year but set to increase in 2012 to $10,000 per year for all four years of matriculation (contingent on a 2.0 GPA), the program aims not only to help graduates pursue higher education, but also to increase the population of the city, thus increasing the tax base. In time the program also promises to provide employers a better educated and more skilled workforce. The Foundation’s $100,000 grant will help leverage the $100,000,000 challenge grant issued by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center over the next ten years.
