As a family foundation, the Hunt Foundation funds a broad range of organizations reflecting the diverse interests of individual trustees. Over 500 grants are awarded each year. Most grants are general grants that are awarded for general operating support. When categorized according to the Foundation Center's Grants Classification System, the majority of grants are made in support of Arts and Culture, Environment, Health, and Human Services. While the Foundation also supports Education, preference is given to educational institutions of particular interest to individual trustees.

In addition to general grants sponsored by individual trustees, the Hunt Foundation also funds special initiatives in Community Development, Environment, and Youth Violence Prevention. These initiatives represent a shared interest across all trustees and are designed to achieve specific program objectives. They are administered according to specific guidelines and have earlier application deadlines. Applicants who are unsure whether to apply for a general grant or a special initiative grant should review the special initiatives guidelines carefully.  If the project for which funding is being sought does not fit within the guidelines, an inquiry for a general grant should be sent.
